Flickr pictobrowser plugin for wordpress
23 July 2007I heard about pictobrowser from Julie and like this much better than the flickr slideshow. However, since “object” and “iframe” are stripped out of wordpress for security reasons, I could no longer embed pictobrowser object directly. Therefore, I modified the flickr slideshow plugin to embed pictobrowser.
- Download the plugin (.zip) here.
- Unzip/install the plugin in your wp-content/plugins directory
- Activate the plugin within wordpress.
- Usage:Once activated you can embed slideshows in your blog post as follows:
[pictobrowseruser_idset_id]
Please feel free to modify the plugin to include tags, and other parameters of pictobrowser. If you do modify the plugin, I would really appreciate if you would inform me of the updates (so that I can use the updated plugin).
Here is the plugin in action (these are photos of Myvatn, Iceland):

Many thanks.

Has anyone had luck altering Pictobrowser’s interface at all? I’d like to remove the “Photo Link” hyperlink that shows to the right side of each caption. Also, is anyone running Pictobrowser without the frame around it? (It shows up on any page that doesn’t have a white background.) I’d love to run it without. Thanks! Tom

I know my credibility might be shot with #$%^ing up the pages comment earliet, but i haven’t been able to figure out how to use this plugin to post a group or pool. I even went into the source and replaced ‘sets’ with ‘groups’, and it doesn’t seem to be rendering at all.
An update that can address this would be much appreciated!

Super plugin but I cannot use it because it didn’t work in IE!!! Can anybody tell me why?
January 28th, 2008 at 4:42 am
@Tom, pictobrowser uses flash and therefore doesn’t allow for the changes you are looking for. You might want to contact the developers of pictobrowser.
@Kate, currently flickr API (which is used in pictobrowser) doesn’t support display of collections. Therefore, you cannot in general display multiple sets. However, if you have multiple sets with a particular tag, you can then show multiple sets using that tag. If you want to use the tag, you need to modify the plugin to use tag instead of sets.
@gfxmonkey, I am not sure what Alpha are you referring to?
@Jeremy, to include groups, you need to edit the plugin source (flickrPictobrowser.php) and add “&source=groups” instead of sets. Also remember to add the group id (not the name but an id) and use it instead of the set id. That is, once you edit the plugin source, you can add the photos using .
@Ibrahim and Eddie, you cannot see it in IE because of security settings in your IE. The plugin works on my webpage when viewed through IE on my home computer (IE 6 and IE 7).

Thanks so mucho for writing pictobrowser into wordpress. You have made a very clean, nice useful tool even more useful. I did alter it some so that I could use the zoom and pull the original sized file from flickr. Here is the altered code..

added:
&imageSize=original
&initialZoom=on
&bgAlpha=90
&initialScale=on
changed: (to comply with site conventions)

PB_HEIGHT – 500

define(“PB_HEIGHT”, 500);
define(“PB_REGEXP”, “/\/”);

Kumara,
This is fabulous! I used Diego’s “Pictobrowser Builder” at http://www.db798.com/pictobrowser/builder.php to make a slideshow with all the modifications I needed. Then I gingerly edited your plugin to match. Now I can work with WordPress pages and posts that contain a Pictobrowser without crashing my template. I still have to use the Builder to find out what my userID# and setID# is every time, but I’m guessing if I tried hard, I could find those on Flickr.
Anyhoo, thanks for making my life much easier.

On my blog right now is displayed all of article content and I don’t want this…

Hi – I am very new to WordPress, and I have never used Plugins before.
I have downloaded and activated the plugin, but don’t know where I am supposed to insert the code!
(from the example)
I’ve tried putting into index.php but I think I may be barking up the wrong tree!

Hi Kumara, thanks for the great plugin. This solved my WordPress problem. When i paste the code from the Pictobuilder into the WP editor, the editor replaced the “&” with & AAAARGHH….
But with your plugin the problem was solved.
Something nice to know!!
If you Ad: &initialScale=on &imageSize=original to you Flashvars VALUE and the image will be fullscreen in the placeholder you defined.

thanks for this great solution! And just to clarify, since I was having this (newbie) problem – I just took this line:
placed it in my blog post where I want the pictobrowser to go, then found the user_id and set_id from the original pictobuilder and put in the values. I left the [] around the set and all is well.
Thank you!

Hi Kumara,
Thank you for your hard work!
For some reason I cannot get the pictobrowser plugin to work. Your Flickr (the iframe version) works fine for me though.
My page I am working on is at http://visualpique.thinkpinkcreative.com/?page_id=3 I used the exact same user and set ids and just put them on top of each other:
The pictobrowser one just shows the code verbatim rather than calling out your plugin.
Some other questions:
- Is there any way to get the slideshow to autoloop rather than ask at the end if I want to see them again?
- Is there any way to change the default time each photo is shown instead of the 5 seconds it usually is?
- And, is there any way to change the background color?
Thank you again for your time. – Caro

I am so sorry for cluttering up your comments area! Well, it is strange, both work fine on your site
Another question (sorry, i have so many!):
- is there any way to enable autoplay and loop in Pictobrowser?
- is there any way to keep the Notes area visible at all times rather than just when mousing over the Notes link?
- is there a way in either plugin to call out photos by a tag amongst a user’s photos?
Thanks again for your time, and apologies again for cluttering up your page

Hi again,
OK, I just figured out why the pictobrowser plugin was not working for me: I looked under the HTML of the page and for some reason it had inserted
before and after every single word / id number! After deleting those it worked fine.Well, still curious about my questions above if you have time to answer them. I’m sorry, I’m such a noob!

Hi,
can you guys enable viewing also private photos, especially by tags? Is it possible?
July 3rd, 2009 at 4:26 am
@greenminute, Flickr API to doesn’t allow for viewing private photos. Tags could be easily done by changing the plugin.
@Georgeina, save the plugin to wp_content/plugins directory and then go to the Plugin managment tab in wordpress and activate it.

great plug-in, just one question. when using the WordPress PictoBrowser Plug-in, my dropdown submenu shows up behind the gallery. is there a way to set z-index so it would show up behind any submenu.
also many flash objects still show up in front because the background needs to be set transparent.
like in Kimili Flash Embed Tag Generator Plug-in, in which you need to set the wmode to transparent for it to display correctly.
